It’s time for young people! This guide to participatory budgeting for young people contains practical advice on how to involve young people in processes that use the participatory budgeting mechanism. Participatory budgeting (PB) has been in existence for several decades and has been used in many different contexts, allowing citizens to have a greater say in decisions regarding the spending of public funds. Gradually, this democratic innovation has expanded its reach, creating new opportunities for decision-making and making democratic processes particularly relevant and appealing to young people.

This guide is based on an extensive collection of case studies on school and youth participatory budgets in Europe and the United States, as well as on other materials available on our project’s website (https://youthpb.eu). The materials have been produced in three languages: English, Polish and Spanish – drawing on the experiences of the partners involved in this project. In many countries, publications on young people’s involvement in participatory processes are already available, although to a lesser extent in the field of participatory budgeting.

Generally speaking, there is still a lack of detailed practical guidance or examples of good practice from which to draw inspiration. In preparing this publication, we have drawn on both existing materials and tools (to which we provide links) and developed our own original models and tools.
